What is AI Summary Optimization?

ASO is the discipline of writing email so it survives the AI layer between you and your reader. It is the SEO of the inbox era.

The inbox just changed forever

For 25 years, "open rate" meant a human being saw your subject line, opened your email, and scanned the body. That contract is gone.

Apple Intelligence, Gmail's Gemini integration, and Outlook Copilot now collapse every email into 1–2 sentences before the human ever sees it. On iPhone, the AI summary is what appears in the notification, the preview pane, and the inbox list. The human reads the summary. The email itself, if at all, comes second.

What this means

Your email isn't read anymore. It's summarized. The AI is now the most important reader in the loop — and it has its own taste, its own quirks, and its own ways of getting your message wrong.

We call optimizing for that reader AI Summary Optimization (ASO). It is to email what SEO was to the web in 2002 and what GEO is to LLM search in 2025.

The five questions ASO asks

  1. Does my key signal survive the summary?
  2. Does my CTA make it through?
  3. Does the AI distort or invent any facts?
  4. Is the summary glanceable on a 5-inch phone screen at 7am?
  5. Do my words trigger spam-y patterns the AI will then echo?

Why now

Apple Intelligence shipped to 100M+ iPhones in late 2024. Gmail rolled Gemini summaries to mobile in 2025. Outlook's Copilot pane is on by default for enterprise. This isn't speculative. It is the new default.

Why us

The Glance is built by the team behind PanelSynth (synthetic personas at scale), Brand Receipts (LLM perception scoring for the open web), and Marketing Hacked (newsletter teardowns). ASO is the inbox application of muscles we already have.
